Christopher Clarey, the New York Times bestselling author of The Master on Federer, talks about pro tennis and more, drawing on 30 years as a New York Times tennis & global sports correspondent

For more than 30 years, Christopher Clarey was an award-winning tennis and global sports correspondent for The New York Times and the chief sports correspondent for The International Herald Tribune. He has worked from bases in France, Spain and the United States.

Now a full-time author, he is one of the world’s leading authorities on tennis and has reported from more than 100 Grand Slam tournaments, interviewing everyone from Bjorn Borg to Serena Williams. His book “The Master: The Long Run & Beautiful Game of Roger Federer” was a New York Times and international bestseller published in 21 languages. His upcoming biography “The Warrior” on Rafael Nadal is to be published in 2025.

Mr. Clarey website “Tennis & Beyond” was named a “Featured Publication” by Substack and has subscribers from 49 states and more than 100 countries.

Mr. Clarey also has covered 15 Olympics, six World Cups, nine world track and field championships, five America’s Cups, 22 British Opens and 10 Ryder Cups. In all, he has written about more than 60 sports for the Times and the IHT, covering everything from bullfighting to sepak takraw to the Inuit sport known as the knuckle hop.In 2018, Mr. Clarey received the Eugene L. Scott Award from the International Tennis Hall of Fame, a career prize awarded for “communicating honestly and critically about the game” and for “making a significant impact on the tennis world”. Previous winners include Arthur Ashe, Billie Jean King, Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova. In 2024, Mr. Clarey received the David A. Benjamin Achievement Award, the top honor from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, awarded to a former varsity tennis player who went on to achieve “excellence in a chosen profession” and make a significant contribution to society. A former commentator for Eurosport, Mr. Clarey, who is fluent in French and proficient in Spanish, has made regular appearances for more than 25 years on major media outlets, including CNN, NPR and the BBC.
