Melissa A. Schilling is the Herzog Family Professor of Management at New York University Stern School of Business, where she also serves as Deputy Department Chair of the Management & Organizations Department, and Director of the Innovation Initiative at the NYU Stern Fubon Center for Technology, Business and Innovation. Professor Schilling’s award-winning research focuses on innovation and strategy in high technology industries such as smartphones, video games, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, electric vehicles, and renewable energies. She is particularly interested in platform dynamics, networks, creativity, and breakthrough innovation. She is the author of Quirky: The remarkable story of the traits, foibles and genius of breakthrough innovators who changed the world. Her textbook, Strategic Management of Technological Innovation (now in its seventh edition), is the number one innovation strategy textbook in the world. She is also a co-author of Strategic Management: An integrated approach (now in its fourteenth edition), one of the top selling strategic management texts in the world.
Professor Schilling has advised numerous companies on innovation and strategy, including Bloomberg Corporation, IBM, Siemens, Standard & Poor’s, Masco Coatings, Zeta Energy, Motley Fool, and many more. She has frequently been featured in major news outlets such as the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, NPR, Bloomberg BusinessWeek, CNBC, Harvard Business Review, and others.
Her research in innovation and strategy has earned her awards such as the National Science Foundation's CAREER Award, the Best Paper in Management Science and Organization Science for 2007 Award, the 2022 Sumantra Ghoshal Award for Rigour and Relevance in the Study of Management, and the 2018 Leadership in Technology Management award at PICMET. She also sits on the editorial review boards of numerous journals and is a senior editor at Strategy Science. Professor Schilling teaches courses in technology and innovation management, strategic management, corporate strategy, and strategy for social-mission-based organizations.
